"... A brand-new LP by Moscow-based Bogdan Dullsky - "Freedom Reflex" - is available from the Italian label Setola di Maiale. Dullsky is the backbone of Quest.Room.Project, whom we have discussed previously. This new recording is described by his Italian hosts as follows: "There are many sounds in his music; they come and they go like a tornado. Movement. The sounds are worked with both great depth and perspective; they differ in intensity, both approaching and retreating. There is a light within this music, yet darkness all around. This is the morphology of a thought." Despite the melodrama of that quotation, it does underscore the fundamental idea behind "Freedom Reflex". Even in its title, we have a tension between "freedom" (active choice) and "reflex" (passive reaction) - hence the references to approaching and retreating in the Italian. In the world of Russian music today, when the age-old complexes of assumed provinciality leave so many artists in a desperate, never-ending state of "catch-up", the issue of stylistic/generic choice is paramount. Rarely are such choices made spontaneously; they're endlessly, painfully protracted as Russian artists try to align themselves with the presumed superior standards of their Western colleagues.Dullsky's audible ebb and flow, the "tornado" of push and pull, are a very dark comment on the nature of selection. Even the titles of these works hint at an elemental, even brutal force. Take, for example, "Heliotaxis", the term that refers to ways in which plants ("choose" to) follow the sun's warmth with slow, inexorable movement." David MacFadyen. Thanx for warm words..but i have to disagree with you... David, a russian artist, as artists in general (if they are true artists) desires to reconnect with the Absolute. To reconnect with the Conscience... you can't divide the artists into the eastern and the western. An artist does not have a nationality. Am I not right? Best regards,BogdanLabels: David MacFadyen |
i would say an artist used to have more of a nationality, because they are influenced by their environment. but now there's internet which does not have such borders
